Legislative Initiatives 2001-2003
Chairperson's Introduction

Dear Readers:

The Wisconsin Council on Developmental Disabilities is required by state and federal statute to advise the legislature and Governor on the needs of individuals with disabilities. As part of its mission, the Council obtains input from individuals with developmental disabilities and their families, county social services systems, service providers, and other sources. The Council endorses legislative positions based upon the gathered information.

The 2001-2003 Legislative Initiatives endorsed by the Council strive to wisely allocate public funds to bolster the contributions made by families and others in the support of individuals with developmental disabilities.

The Council recognizes the enormous financial and time contributions currently made by families to enhance the lives of their family members. However, the vast majority of families are not able to act as the sole provider for individuals with developmental disabilities. Publicly funded programs are essential to supporting individuals in their communities and preventing out-of-home or institutional placements. Supporting the Council's positions will help ensure that families and individuals receive the supports they need.

As you review the 2001-2003 Legislative Initiatives, please feel free to contact the Council with your questions and suggestions.

Sincerely,

Jim Strachota Chairperson
