A new video called "Caleb's Story" is now available from the WCDD. This 11-minute video available in both VHS and DVD was developed by the Wisconsin Council on Developmental Disabilities and Wisconsin Coalition for Advocacy. It highlights the work and home experiences of a young man with very involved health, cognitive, and physical disabilities. Footage includes him at work, shopping, traveling in the community and at the home he purchased. [Purchasing Information: DVD or VHS]
3.) Elections are right around the corner!!
2006 is a major election year. There will be Primary elections held on February 21 and September 12, 2006. The February Primary will determine candidates for the April 4th Spring election. These elections are for judges, local city and county officials, and school boards. The September Primary will determine candidates for the November 7th General election. These elections are for Governor, Attorney General, State Assembly, odd numbered State Senate districts, Congress, and U.S. Senate. There is also the possibility of local referenda and state constitutional amendments on the ballots. Learn the candidate's positions on the issues. Vote in each election. If you can help, volunteer on a candidate's campaign or at the polls.
4.) Give a Mom a Break
This is the name being given to a new initiative to raise awareness of the different needs and challenges that families with children with disabilities face on a daily basis.
The idea is to have legislators and other elected officials invited into homes across Wisconsin on Saturday, May 13, 2006, the day before Mothers Day. These officials will have an opportunity to learn firsthand what its like to raise a child with disabilities. Efforts are underway now to organize visits around the state. For more information about this effort contact John Shaw at WCDD at 608/266-7707 or email at: shawj2@dhfs.state.wi.us.
